About Tom Dunn

Thomas B. Dunn was an exceptional leader and mentor to many in the Buckhannon community and in the oil and natural gas industry. Most of all, he was a wonderful and loving husband, father and grandfather who cherished his family more than anything. He was respected and loved by many.

Dunn graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1964, Dunn worked full-time at Union Drilling, Inc. as lease and right-of-way agent, eventually working into the supervision of well completion. In 1972, he became president of Union Drilling, Inc., founded D-Aspen, Inc. in 1986 serving as president from 1986 to 1996, and founded Tuscany Gas, LLC in 1996. He co-founded Phoenix Diversified Ventures, Inc. in 1987 and served as president, co-founded Phoenix Energy Sales Company in 1995 and served as president, co-founded T&F Operating, Inc. in 1998 and served as president until his death.

A true advocate of Buckhannon and Upshur County, Tom was involved in a number of civic organizations and was one of the five individuals who arranged initial broad community funding for the current Upshur County Development Authority. He was a former member of the West Virginia National Guard, member of Kappa Alpha Order fraternity, and instrumental in the Buckhannon Parks & Recreational Complex. 

Dunn served as President of the Independent Oil & Gas Association of West Virginia (IOGAWV) in 1974. Under his leadership, IOGA WV won a major regulatory victory which doubled gas prices for IOGAWV members and precipitated major growth in the association. He was a founder of the Appalachian Energy Group (AEG), and served as its president for several terms. Dunn was also a director of the West Virginia Oil and Natural Gas Association (WVONGA) and held membership in the Pennsylvania Independent Oil & Gas Association (PIOGA), Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA), Ohio Oil and Gas Association (OOGA) and the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Inc. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, and was a former member of the Board of Trustees of West Virginia Wesleyan College.

He was awarded the West Virginia Oil & Gas Man of the Year Award and the West Virginia Wesleyan College Alumni Award in 1982, Buckhannon Business & Professional Women’s Club Outstanding Employer of the Year in 1985, and was one of the two initial recipients of the IOGA West Virginia Distinguished Service “Gunslinger” Award in 1992.  

Dunn died of cancer unexpectedly in April 2012. He is survived by his wife Carol Jean (Campbell), two daughters – Tracy Cunningham and husband Mark, and Jennifer Fluke and husband Eric – two granddaughters, two grandsons, and several nieces and nephews. The Tom Dunn Energy and Leadership Academy was founded by the Independent Oil & Gas Association of West Virginia in August 2012 to honor Dunn’s memory.
